Purpose

The Doctorate of Ice Cream (ICD) award recognizes TICA members who have made significant and lasting contributions to the association and the ice cream industry through key areas including innovation, leadership, and education. 

Eligibility

To be considered for The Ice Cream Association's Doctorate of Ice Cream (ICD) award, a nominee must meet all of the following criteria:   
  • Be a TICA member in good standing (company must have held TICA membership for at least five consecutive years). 
  • Demonstrate meaningful contributions to TICA, their company, and the industry as a whole in the fields of (but not limited to): 
    • Innovation – Creation or implementation of programs or initiatives that positively impact the association and/or the industry.  
    • Leadership – Holding leadership roles within TICA and/or in their professional career. 
    • Education – Sharing best practices, mentoring, and promoting industry knowledge and trends to help elevate the broader community. 
  • In exceptional cases, an Honorary Doctorate of Ice Cream (ICD) may be awarded to non-members or individuals outside the industry who have made a significant positive impact on the ice cream sector (e.g., a public official advocating for the industry). 

Nomination Process

  • Self-nominations and peer nominations are both accepted. Open to TICA members only. 
  • You may nominate as many individuals from your own company or another TICA member company as you'd like. 
  • Submission requirements: 
    • Completed nomination form. 
    • Narrative (200-word min. and 500-word max.) explaining why the nominee should receive this award, including specific examples of their impact. 
    • Up to 5 supporting materials are recommended (e.g., media coverageperformance data, testimonials). 

Selection Process

  • Nominations will be reviewed and scored objectively by the Awards Committee using a standardized rubric. 
  • There may be more than one award recipient per year; however, only one recipient per company is permitted annually. The Awards Committee will consider the total number of award winners for the year and the length of the Awards Ceremony. 
  • Nominees will be notified of the outcome by the Chair of the Awards Committee before the end of summer. 

Award Presentation

  • Award is presented at the TICA Awards Ceremonytypically held in conjunction with the Annual Convention. 
  • Award recipient will receive recognition via: 
    • On-stage presentation during the Awards Ceremony. 
    • Feature in TICA’s monthly newsletter. 
    • Highlight on the TICA website and social media channels. 
  • Award recipient will receive: 
    • An official Doctorate of Ice Cream trophy. 
    • One complimentary registration to the Annual Convention in the year the award is presented (as long as the recipient is not currently active in the ice cream industry).

2023 Inductee

Peter D'Angelo

Peter founded IntegraSys in 1996, and since then, has been a trusted advisor and technology solution provider for the many changes that have taken place in the ice cream industry over the past 30 years. He has consistently demonstrated a passion for the ice cream industry and has worked tirelessly to provide the right software technology for many TICA distributors and manufacturers. In addition, he has been committed to the growth of TICA as an active participant, sponsor, making it possible for his employees to serve on the board, and ambassador.


2015 Inductees

Mike Johnston 


Mike was born in Taos, New Mexico on July 27, 1945. He worked in the marketing and food service industries most of his life. In 2006 he and wife Sharon became the proud owners of Southern Ice Cream Corporation, a Distributor of Premium Ice Cream and Specialty Foods in Stafford Texas. Mike was a Member and past President of TICA. He was passionate about bettering the Ice Cream industry and was always willing to share, mentor, and volunteer.

​Mohan Thawani

 

Mohan’s work life included Dickie Dee Ice Cream, Good Humor, Breyers Ice Cream, Unilever Ice Cream, Avalanche Foods and most recently Supper Works! Mohan was also a long time member and a supporter of the TICA.


 2014 Inductee

The TICA is proud to announce William Greg McCarty from Blue Bunny as recipient of the 2014 Doctorate of Ice Cream.


2013 Inductees

President Chris Long proudly announced four new recipients of the ICD during the 44th Annual Convention's closing reception on November 7, 2014. The honorees were: Daniel Morales, Tom Renwald, Sr., Ed Markey, and Robert Borski, Jr.

It is an honor and privilege to announce that Ginger Shain, Leo Gage and Bob Kleifgen were the first three recipients of the Doctorate of Ice Cream (ICD) award. Their awards were presented at the 42nd Annual Convention in November 2011.
